Vinification:
This exceptional wine is made from a low production, old vineyard, where small, thick-skinned berries are picked at full ripeness. The grapes are fermented with regular pumping over to maximize color extraction, and then matured in 300-litre oak barrels for added complexity and depth.

Terroir:
Bergsig Estate is located on the upper slopes of the Breede River Valley, at an elevation of 240-350m above sea level. The Mediterranean climate, with an annual rainfall of approximately 1000mm, results in slow ripening of the grapes. The region experiences cold winters with snow until late spring, leading to a harvest that starts 2-3 weeks later than the rest of the country. The unique geology of the area, with the Worcester Fault running through the valley, contributes to diverse soil types that add complexity to the wine. The variation in diurnal temperatures in the region also helps to preserve the balance of natural acids in the grapes, resulting in wines of exceptional quality.
